Personal Branding: How to Stand Out in the Commercial Real Estate Market

Whether you are new to the commercial real estate market or a seasoned professional, your personal brand can have a huge impact on your success. Most people think that branding is only applicable to large companies, but in reality everyone has a personal brand. Use branding to your advantage to stand out from your competition in the commercial real estate market with these tips.

Be uniquely yourself

This might sound like a no-brainer, but do not try to be someone you are not—there’s no reason to put on a show. Instead, be yourself and you will attract the attention of people who are drawn to your unique personality. All commercial real estate professionals have something that sets them apart from the rest. Let your personality shine!

Know your strengths and weaknesses

We all have things that we are good at, so be honest with yourself about your natural strengths and weaknesses. Are you a people person who can strike up a conversation with anyone? Are you amazing at negotiating the best deal for your clients? Do you excel at finding that “needle in a haystack” property? Maybe you’re great at client relationships but struggle a bit with marketing. Whatever the case may be, it is best to focus your time and energy on your strengths. You can always hire someone to help you with the other areas of your business. You may notice that a lot of commercial real estate teams are composed of people who excel at different things. This is a great strategy because each person can focus on what their strengths are, and they are all benefiting from the expertise of everyone on the team.

Understand branding

In basic terms, your brand is what people think of when they hear your name. Stop for a second and think about what pops in your head when you hear “Starbucks” or “Apple” or “Mercede-Benz.” In all three examples, most people think of high quality and reputable brands. Here’s another example; what do you think of when you compare “Kia” verses “Lamborghini”? While they are both automotive manufacturers, they have very different brands. Kia is known for economy-priced cars, while Lamborghini is known for high-end luxury. What do you want to be known for? What do you want your clients and colleagues to think of when they hear your name?

Consistency Is key

In order for your brand to stand out from the crowd, it needs to be consistent. From your logo, to your color palette, to the tone of your message, everything should follow your branding guidelines. Remember that most of your potential clients will interact with you online, so your website, blog, social media pages, and email marketing should all look and feel uniform across the board. This branding should also tie into your printed marketing materials, presentations, and face-to-face experiences. Consistency allows your clients to know what they can expect from you, and creates confidence with potential clients.

When it comes to personal branding, there is no one size fits all approach. Write down your core values and what you want to be known for, and use those elements to develop your brand. Using the tips above, you’ll be well on your way to standing out in the commercial real estate market.
